Flamenco: the Land Is Still Fertile --EPI #1-GP
Shot in southern Spain's "cradle of flamenco," this episode not only introduces the viewer to flamenco and some of the arguments surrounding it, but it focuses on the relationship between flamenco and gitano (Spanish Gypsy) farm laborers. They lived in workers' dormitories most of the year and to keep their spirits up, they did flamenco in the evenings. There is also a section explaining where the gitanos come from and how they got to Spain in the 15th century. Solos are by Niño Jero el Periquín (guitar), Tía Juana la del Pipa (cante-singing), Antonio de la Malena (cante-singing), and Antonio el Pipa (dance). In Spanish with English subtitles, there are also some fascinating interviews.
